How to add RSS Feed HootSuite

3rd Party recruiting on LinkedIn

Feed Gopher jobs to your Social Networks

You have always been able to feed your Gopher jobs to your own website.  Now Gopher can feed your Gopher jobs to Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, etc..

Before we explain this wonderful and powerful feature to increase your placements, we need to add a thought of encouragement and warning.  This feature will increase your ability to fill positions only if you understand and use your Social Networks.  If you consistently nurture and cultivate your connections on LinkedIn, gather friends on Facebook and encourage Twitter followers, this feature will be extremely useful to you.  If nothing else has energized you to put some consistent work into your Social Networks, perhaps this feature will motivate you to do so!

Most Social Networks and Job Boards are designed to accept electronic feeds in standardized formats.  Gopher is designed to send these feeds to any web page/account you are registered with.  Many of these accounts are free!  Some have minimal costs and you can easily determine if they have any value for you.  For Social Network job feeds we have worked with two that seem to be the best and most popular: HootSuite and TwitterFeed.  If you know of and have used others, please let us know.

HootSuite has the most Social Networks you can subscribe to and post to including ping.fmThis is one of our favorites because of the ability to reach networks beyond the normal Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.  The help system and diagnostics could stand some improvement but you will find that it does the job for you and does it for free!

Here are the steps for setting up HootSuite to feed jobs to your Social Networks from Gopher:

1) Contact Gopher support and request that a Jobs feed folder be set up for your company on one of the BlackDog websites.  Don't worry this folder cannot be accessed and is not visible to the public.

2) Create an account on HootSuite with your user name and password.

3) On the main menu select 'Add a Social Network' and pick all the social networks desired  and follow the directions for granting HootSuite the ability to post to the Social Networks that you selected.

4) Return to main menu and select 'Add an RSS Feed' and click the 'RSS New Feed' button at the bottom.

5) Enter the 'Feed URL' provided by BlackDog (see #1 above).

6) In 'Profiles to send feed items to' select one of your 'Social Networks' in the drop down.

7) Select post interval times and number of posts as desired.  I would suggest every hour and 1 post at a time.

8) The 'prepend text' can be left blank but you could try putting your home page URL here - be sure to use a URL shortener before you enter it.

TwitterFeed is much more barebones than HootSuite.  It allows only three Social Networks - LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter - but has one feature that HootSuite does not. 'Test RSS Feed' will let you know if there are any problems with the Gopher jobs you are feeding before they are posted.

Here are the steps for setting up TwitterFeed to feed jobs to your Social Networks from Gopher:

1) Contact Gopher support and request that a Jobs feed folder be set up for your company on one of the BlackDog websites.  Don't worry this folder cannot be accessed and is not visible to the public.

2) Create an account on TwitterFeed with your user name and password.

3) Go to the 'Dashboard' and click 'Create New Feed' button.

4) Enter the 'RSS Feed URL' provided by BlackDog (see #1 above).

5) Click 'Advanced Settings' and set post interval and number of posts. I would suggest every 30 minutes and 1 post at a time. In 'Post Content' select 'Title and description' uncheck 'Post Link' and in 'Post Sorting' select 'pubDate'.

5) Click the 'Continue to Step 2' button at bottom of page and select your Social Network.

6) Click 'All Done!'

7) On the Dashboard you can click 'Check Now!' which sends the feeds immediately (well almost) to each of your selected Social Networks.

Using Gopher to feed Jobs to Social Networks

1) Make sure you have the latest Gopher upgrade, 2012.316 or above.

2) Go to the Position tab and query for a list of the desired jobs you wish to post to your Social Networks.

3) Create a 'Hot List' of the queried positions and select the positions desired for posting.

4) From the 'Hot List' menu select 'Export' > 'Export Positions to Social Networks' > 'Via RSS feed'.

5) In the 'Posting n position's to RSS Feed' window enter the following

  • 'Remote Host' - blackdogrecruitingsoftware.com

  • 'User name' - Provided by BlackDog per your request.

  • 'Password' - Provided by BlackDog per your request.

  • 'Company URL, jobs or application page' - Defaults to the website URL of the recruiter's profile in Gopher.

6) Click OK and the selected job titles and descriptions will be posted to your Social Networks.

Note: Most Social Networks limit the amount of characters you can post so it is a good idea to keep your job descriptions in Gopher short or have a summary in the first 140 characters.  Also you may want to put links in those first 140 characters to your website's jobs page, application page or to an email address so that people who are interested know how to contact you.
