Ask any pro athlete today what they attribute their success to and they will tell you it's their consistent and persistent daily training regimen. No athlete will tell you that they did initial training and then stopped because they knew how to hit a baseball or knew the rules of football. As a recruiter, one of the big things you highlight and candidates ask about is training on their new job, but how seriously did you take your own training as a recruiter if you got any training at all?

Acquiring comprehensive training, not just a great session at a conference, is the best and most pragmatic path to success as a recruiter or indeed in any business.  Ongoing training is proven to increase profits, decrease turnover and increase the ability to quickly incorporate new tools and technologies into daily operations.  So why are recruiters so reluctant to make training part of their day to day existence?

We don't have time. We hear that a lot. The source of the objection is usually crazy deadlines but in reality this masks the fact that most recruiters don't see the long-term benefits of training.  One hour of training can save you hundreds of hours by helping you work smarter not harder and alleviate the pressure of getting multiple different things all done effectively.

We already know how to be recruiters. Really? Do you know the ten important questions to ask a candidate after an interview BEFORE you do your client debriefing?  Do you know the six keys to good client solicitation?  If you do know, is this an ingrained and consistent part of your daily process and are your notes recorded somewhere where everyone has access to them like in Gopher?  Times change, people and the marketplace change and as a good recruiter, you will take advantage of training to continually hone your recruiting skills.

The training doesn't apply to me.  If you and your employees don't see the big picture of how your company works, how the recruitment process works and how each person in your organization contributes to that process, you hinder your ability to function as a profitable company.  Sure, your data entry person may not need to know how to prep a candidate for an interview, but by being exposed to that training it can spark an interest in job growth and development or prompt a discussion on accomplishing goals from different points of view.

Great ways to incorporate daily training. Webinars, Gopher training and online lessons are just three easy, quick and free ways you can start making training a part of your daily routine, but the buy-in for training programs must begin at the top. By recognizing the benefit of job training and development and incorporating that philosophy into your corporate culture, not only will you attract higher quality recruiters but you will have reduced turnover, higher profits and greater overall job satisfaction amongst your recruiters and other employees.
