See! You cannot multi-task

As our 'Green Tip of the month' on the left suggests, vendors claiming tools that allow for multi-tasking should be viewed with skepticism.

Many of the options in Gopher allow a recruiter to view multiple windows with the home screen still in view, thereby promoting a more effective ability to time slice not multi-task.

So often promo material from recruiting software vendors think that they are extolling their own virtues with sentences like:

"The flexible easy to use multi-tasking interface of this recruiting software enables users to perform multiple tasks simultaneously."

Is that like the boy on the TV commercial rolling his eyes and flapping his hands at the same time?

Here is what LinkedIn says about Multi-Tasking.

"Human multitasking is the best performance by an individual of appearing to handle more than one task at the same time. The term is derived from computer multitasking. An example of multitasking is taking phone calls while typing an email. Some believe that multitasking can result in time wasted due to human context switching and apparently causing more errors due to insufficient attention."

In all fairness to most of our competition, maybe they have just fallen into the bad buzzword trap like 'I will circle back to you', but the truth of the matter is, the ability to multi-task is a myth.

Humans simply can't multi-task but they can time slice. Time slicing, as it applies to people and recruiters, is the full focus of your time on one task for a short period before moving on to the next task.  Some can do it better and more effectively and faster than others depending on what tools they are using to do it.

Gopher's Options allow recruiters to slice their time more effectively so they can get to the time slice faster and focus better while they are in it.

 Command menu Gopher Options

The Command Menu has too many options to cover at once, so here we will cover the first five.

  •   This is a toggle to turn on or off the display of the notes on the current person. Because Gopher is dedicated to displaying as much information as possible in a single window and Gopher keeps all notes in the same location, it may be helpful to turn off the display of notes. Some recruiters feel seeing all the notes is a distraction, but not everyone therefore it is an option.

  •   Gopher writes tons of notes on its own when a recruiter emails, text messages, changes and imports profiles. Sometimes it is easier to focus on a person when you don't see Gopher's meticulous tracking, but sometimes you need to dig deeper without having to be distracted by turning on all the notes. It's your choice.

  •   I do not believe any other vendor offers this feature without extra cost!  Recruiters can actually change the database they are using without logging in again to another account.  This is like having an infinite number of accounts at no extra cost. Have a different segment of your business that you want to separate out into a separate database?  Here's a great way to do it.

  •   Gopher can import resumes and LinkedIn profiles faster than anyone but sometimes it is better to spend a little time on this resume with some Gopher help pointing things out.  The pre-edit screen allows you to see how Gopher has interpreted the document you are importing so that you can change/add information to that profile then and there.  This is a great timesaver because you don't have to go back after the import to add things to the profile.

  •   Once again no other vendor has this feature.  This is not a 'zoom in' or 'zoom out'.  Because zooms add scrollbars and rob you of time and focus in the 'Time slice', when you resize Gopher we make sure that everything stays in focus without adding those nasty, time consuming scrollbars.
