Query Operators

Wildcard ‘*’

The asterisk, *, is the most commonly used query operator.

Examples:

Typing 310* in Home Phone will find all records with a home phone number in the 310 area code.

Typing Sm* in the Last Name box will find all records with the last name beginning ‘Sm’ (Smith, Smiley, Small).

Typing *TAX* in the Skills box will find all records with a keyword of TAX (simply typing TAX in the Skills box will find those records in which TAX is the only keyword)

Typing *TAX*FINANCIAL* in the Skills box will find all records with the keyword TAX and the keyword FINANCIAL.

 

Range Query ‘[ ]’ or ‘:’

Examples:

Text Field Example:  Typing [A-C]* in Last Name will find last names beginning A, B or C.  Typing 8[0-1]* in Zip Code will find zip codes that begin with ‘8’ and the second digit is either a ‘0’ or a ‘1’.

Number Example:  Typing 25000:35000 in Salary will find salaries from $25,000 thru $35,000.

Date Example:  Typing 01/01/04:06/30/04 in Record Date will find all records added in the first half of 2004.

 

Null Value Query ‘=’

If you would like to find all records that have an empty value, use the = operator.

Example:  Typing = in Email will find all records with a blank email address.

 

Or Query ‘^’

If you would like to perform an OR query, use the ^ operator.

Examples:

Typing *JAVA^SQL* in Skills will find all records that have either JAVA or SQL as a keyword.

Typing CA^CO in State will find all records that are in California or Colorado.

 

Less Than, Greater Than ‘< >’

<   Less than

<= Less than or equal to

>   Greater than

>= Greater than or equal to

<> Not equal to

Examples:

Typing <50000 in Salary will find all records in which the salary is less than $50,000.  Typing <=50000 in Salary will find all records in which the salary is less than or equal to $50,000.

Typing >01/01/04 in Record Date will find all records that were added after January 1st, 2004.  Typing >=01/01/04 in Record Date will find all records that were added on January 1st, 2004 or after.

Typing <>CA in State will find all records in a state other than California.

 

Whole Word Only ‘* *’

To perform a search on the Resume tab and only include in the results entire words found, type * word * (there is a space before and after the word). 

Example:  Typing * cia * in Resume Body will find all resumes containing ‘CIA’ as a whole word and will not include resumes with words in which cia are found together, such as financial, association, social, special. 

The Whole Word search is only available on the Resume tab.
